Pre-requisites: Speech Communication in Chinese 口语沟通

Synopsis
This is a module built upon the pre-requisite course of Speech Communication in Chinese at level 1.2. It applies skills and knowledge acquired in that course to higher levels of professional and social demands in presentations.
This module emphasizes on the importance of critical thinking, individual reasoning, responsible opinions, self-initiative as well as teamwork.
Students are introduced to the tools for presentations as well as the theory and practice of public speaking, involving design and delivery of various kinds of speeches, and the development of organizational, vocal, listening and critical skills.
Students will also develop leadership qualities by combining theoretical and experiential perspectives. They will develop and apply knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to be effective and perceptive communicators in a leadership position.

Module Objectives
Upon completion of this module, the student should be able to:
1.    Present a simple “live” capsule program on broadcast radio medium
2.    Speak standardized or more standardized (标准或比较标准) Mandarin
3.    Use the voice effectively to convey intended message and desired meaning
4.    Conduct basic and meaningful research on approved topics
5.    Organize and present materials in a logical and coherent manner
6.    Listen and discuss critically, effectively, efficiently, and attentively
7.    Gain confidence in presenting oneself and prepared materials in public
8.    Understand the different manners of delivering instructional, informational and argumentative presentations
9.    Develop a sense of self-awareness and strength, gain more self-confidence in presentation, as well as cultivate a unique individual personality in speech
10.    Be aware of individual’s leadership qualities as well as communication and working style within a group through organizing an event
11.    Learn more about group dynamics and conflict resolution gained through the experience of implementing group meetings and organizational skills
12.    Be alert to social developments and issues in current affairs, especially pertaining to Singapore’s local context

Teaching and Learning Strategies
The teaching and learning methods used in this module are designed to help students meet module objectives.
In order to facilitate the development of higher order thinking skills and group skills the module is delivered via highly interactive and facilitation-style lectures and tutorials.
1.    Lectures
Lectures provide students with a theoretical foundation for the module’s many activities and assignments. They present definitions and examples while also clarifying concepts and outlining key principles. New topics are generally introduced in lectures before they are addressed in tutorials. Guests who are professional practitioners will be invited to lecture from time to time.
2.    Tutorials
Tutorials emphasize practical application of the theories taught in lectures. Students will develop their knowledge and abilities through interactive workshops and games. Videos/songs are periodically played to reinforce ideas and concepts.
2.1    Oral Presentations
All speech assignments are presented during tutorials, followed by evaluation and coaching from tutor and peers.
2.2    Games/Exercises
Activities are used to enhance understanding and confidence in the learning process.
3.    Consultation with Lecturer
Time is allotted for individual consultation with the tutor regarding each student’s progress, presentation proposals, and overall speaking skills.
4.    Non-Contact Time
Students will read and research topics, draft outlines and create presentations. Ample practice and rehearsal prior to in-class presentation is expected. Students are also expected to review relevant lecture and tutorial notes prior to completing and submitting assignments.
5.    Information Technology Component
All assignments submitted are typed or presented on computers. A blog as well as emails are used as regular means of outside-classroom interaction.

Assessment:
Broadcast (Radio) Presentation (RADIOP) 20% Assessed in Week 4

Students will have to be adept at the radio presentation suite’s control panel, read a self-chosen passage or article, and choose appropriate background music as well as select a song for broadcast.

Instructional Presentation (INSTRP) 30% Assessed in Week 8
Students are to teach the entire class a new skill and impart new knowledge through demonstration, as well as displaying the ability to train at least one other classmate on-the-spot the same set of skills demonstrated.

Professional Presentation (PROJTK) 20% Assessed in Week 13

Students are teamed together to propose the organising of an event for School of Humanities. This is a group effort. Team members will have to decide the various roles each has to play in the presentation as well as execution of the proposed plan.

Argumentative Presentation (INFARG) 30% Assessed in Week 17
Students are to decide on a topic to argue about, which is initially unacceptable by the majority. Through persuasive techniques, students will have to win over the audience and gain their acceptance while providing a new perspective at the same time.

Extra Credits (XTRACR) 10% Assessed in Week 17
Students may choose to submit a published article in local Chinese newspapers as extra credit work. The article should reveal some thoughts about current situations and reflect maturity and understanding of society at large.
